The Man Who Knew Infinity tells the story of mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, who grew up poor in Madras, India, and as a result of self-teaching himself mathematics on the streets. Against all odds, he achieves almost immediate fame after he first starts publishing his original results—mainly on number theory—at age twenty-two. His early work has ramifications that still affect mathematics today. However remarkable his progress might seem to an outside observer, it is nothing compared to how incredibly hard Srinivasa works at mathematics. It is not enough for him to learn new material; he has to invent it himself so that no one can follow in his footsteps. He is a genius who practices his craft obsessively, and yet he remains a poor student, never receiving any higher education. He refuses to accept that there is anything wrong with him, and instead believes that his shortcomings as a student are no more than an impediment to his progress as a mathematician. In fact, his incredible mathematical achievements are largely the result of some of his most arduous struggles as an undergraduate. And it is those struggles which have been so well documented by his close friends.Ramanujan's first published paper was a minor mathematical contribution on prime numbers. He would not be known as a mathematician until the paper was brought to the attention of London's Royal Society in 1913 by an anonymous letter writer. The Royal Society published the paper without asking for sign-off from the author, and the resulting press coverage propelled Ramanujan to fame.Written in English by Hal Daumé III, "The Man Who Knew Infinity" is based on the biography by mathematician G. H. Hardy (also known as Hardy's theorem), published in 1936. The "New York Times Book Review" called it "an essentially memoir of Srinivasa Ramanujan". The novel was translated into Hindi in 2013 by Krishen Khanna under the title "Ishq Ka Cabbana" (English: The Love of God). The novel was released in the U.S.A on July 13, 2014 by Inkshares Inc.

In 2011, Ramanujan's widow, Janaki Ramanujan, filed a lawsuit against "The Man Who Knew Infinity", alleging that it had been published without her permission and that she had been deeply offended by the book’s depictions of her late husband. On January 8, 2016 a judge dismissed the lawsuit arguing that the novel was a work of fiction and describing it as a “genuine literary work protected by copyright law. ” In the book "Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions" written in 1884–1886, a single-dimensional creature “Euclid” describes the scenes of his adventures in two and three dimensions, and thus inspired other authors to create other works involving strange beings from different dimensions. In particular, one should consider the 12-dimensional novel from 1922 by the Englishman H. G. Wells, which is known as "The Time Machine". In this novel a strange being from another dimension comes back to Earth every 100 years to visit a certain time period so that the narrator could learn about his strange world and its inhabitants.
